Book vs Movie: The Fault In Our Stars Dreams That Glitter

photo

I was introduced to this #1 New York Times Bestseller at some point last year, and since have developed a serious liking for John Green’s writing and am slowly but surely making my way through his books (where would be the fun if I read them all at once? Saying that, they’ll probably all be read by the end of this super long summer).

“Books are so special and rare and yours that advertising your affection feels like betrayal.”

I absolutely adored the book, it tells the story of two teens falling in love, but it’s different to the other teen romance novels. I’m not usually one to read books or watch films for that matter, about terminal disease as it’s just really depressing and I don’t see the point in reading something like that that’s just going to get you down. So this was the first (and only one so far) I’d read and I was a little nervous, I’d heard comments about it and I knew it was going to be emotionally destroying or something to that effect, so I was a little skeptical to read it, but I was persuaded into doing so anyway.

“I decided a while ago not to deny myself the simpler pleasures of existence.”

I was pleasantly surprised. The way the story is written is so that it tries as much as possible not to focus on the underlying theme of cancer and illness, because that’s not the point. The point is that these people still want a ‘normal’ life as much as possible.

“That’s the thing about pain, it demands to be felt.”

At the end of the day the book tells us a beautifully tragic love story, and you know from the beginning and all the raving reviews that it’s not going to end happily, but as you read page after page you kind of forget about all that and you get lost completely in the story of Hazel and Augustus. Their love is young and magical, and the characters are unique. Augustus is very cheeky and charming, and he is written about in a way that makes you fall in love with him at the same time as Hazel does. You forget about their illnesses and you read along as if it’s any other romance story, the inevitable ending completely slips your mind at the time.

“Maybe ‘okay’ will be our always.”

It’s truly gripping, there’s no putting it down. And there’s no limit to how many times you can read it, I borrowed it from a friend the first time I read it but I had to buy my own copy so I could read it over and over. It’s not going to get old any time soon, and even though the whole story is engraved in my mind, I still find myself hopelessly rooting for Hazel and Gus’ love for each other – and in the moment, you really do forget about the tragedy of it all.

“You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don’t give it the power to kill. A metaphor.”

Now, when I heard they were turning this amazing book into a movie, I couldn’t pretend not to be a little nervous for it. Movies create a wider audience, so in a way it’s almost a move to introduce even more people the story, however creating a movie from such a successful book with such a large, supportive fanbase is no easy task, especially if the idea to please the people who are already fans of the material, which generally it is. I followed the making of the movie on twitter where clips from the set were posted from the likes of John Green himself, who thankfully had a lot to do with how the movie went. When it’s put into the hands of other people completely new to the story, that’s where problems occur.

“My thoughts are stars I can’t fathom into constellations.”

I went to see the first showing on the 19th, and was excited to see it but also nervous that it wouldn’t live up to my expectations of the book, but much to my delight – it did.
The casting was fantastic. First of all there’s Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort portraying the love of Hazel and Gus, and what an amazing job they did of it. Nat Wolff as Isaac was definitely a good choice, he fitted my vision of the character really well. Laura Dern playing Hazel’s mother was also a really great casting, she was perfect for the whole and that really came across. Another one that really stuck out as a really good choice was Mike Birbiglia as Patrick, the support group leader. He was wonderful, and although he wasn’t quite what I imagined Patrick to look like when I read the book, he was a really good choice and I really liked how he played the character. The rest of the cast was brilliant too, but those are the people I thought were really worth mentioning.

“I’m on a roller coaster that only goes up, my friend.”

The story itself in terms of sequencing and scenes etc, was incredibly accurate to the book. Other than a slight change in the ending due to the absence of Hazel’s friend, Caitlin in the film (she didn’t really have a huge amount of relevance to the plot line, but she was the last piece of evidence of Hazel having a ‘normal’ life before things changed), everything else pretty much stayed exactly the same. There was one or two scenes missing but nothing really major. The only other differences I noticed were the fact that the eggs they throw at Monica’s car cost $5 instead or $4, and they didn’t drink out of Winnie the Pooh cups. Exactly. The changed details were that small, and I only noticed them because I’d spent the night before desperately trying to finish the book again before watching the movie.

Overall, I was very impressed with the movie. A mix of excellent casting and fantastic directing by Josh Boone, I think the movie will be just as successful as the book. I urge you all to go and see it and read the book.

“Some infinities are bigger than other infinities.”

Also, just a little note: don’t go to a first showing of a movie based on an incredibly popular YA fiction book, if you don’t want to be surrounded by fangirls. And sobbing before it’s even started because we know what happens. Just a little tip.

P.S. All the quotes within this post are taken from the book!

West Side Story|Dreams That Glitter

download

I can’t tell you how long I’ve been waiting for today, I think we booked the tickets way back at the beginning of the year, and it’s been a long few months of revision and exams since then in the lead up to this coincidental end of exams celebration (I didn’t realise my last exam was to be the day before when we originally booked the tickets). Anyway, incase the post title isn’t blindingly obvious enough for you, today I went to see West Side Story at Milton Keynes Theatre.

I’ve not been to see a musical since I was in Year 7 at school and we went on a school trip to see The Sound Of Music. Why I’ve not been back to the theatre to see another since then, I’m not entirely sure, but anyway it happened again today and I’m sure it won’t be such a long wait before I see something else.

West Side Story is a timeless classic, a modern contemporary retelling of the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet, if you like. It tells the story of ‘star crossed lovers’ Tony and Maria, who ignore the expectations of the people around them and all the violence and rivalry between two teenage gangs, The Jets and The Sharks, determined to spend the rest of their lives together, whatever it takes, willing to take risks along the way. The story is an emotional rollercoaster of ups and downs, and that paired with some outstanding acting, heartfelt singing and flawless choreography (Jerome Robbins) all adds up to make a truly wonderful performance.

The chemistry between Tony and Maria was portrayed perfectly by Katie Hall and stand-in Dom Hodson. Their voices were really beautiful together and you find yourself really wanting them to be together forever, although the inevitable tragic ending to the story is looming right around the corner.

All of the songs are so well written however old they may be, they’re still wonderful, and you’ll find them stuck in your head for a good few days after I expect. It’s difficult not to sing along!

The whole show was very well put together and I loved every second of it. From the second row of the stalls you can literally see everything down to the sweat dripping off of the hard working performers. I’m incredibly glad I got to experience this talent and see it all unfold on stage just meters away from me. You get drawn into the action and it’s really captivating to watch.

Tonight was the last performance of the show in Milton Keynes, but the tour isn’t over yet so I recommend you see if it comes near you! Take a look at http://www.westsidestorytheshow.co.uk 🙂

Every show that I see just convinces me even more that this is the industry I want to work in, whatever that may involve! And I’d really love to tour the country with some kind of production some day.

P.S. – This was written on the 15th June, and i’m not entirely sure how it ended up in my drafts and not published. So, erm, yeah.

Review: Freederm |Dreams That Glitter

20140601-173750-63470700.jpg

I have rather problematic skin and I’ve been trying various products to try and clear it up and am still yet to find something successful in doing so. I thought Freederm might be the one and it’s pricier than other products I’ve tried so I thought it might do the trick, but I’ve almost used up the cleanser and moisturiser and my skin is no better off. I do like the products, they’re not harsh on my face and leave it feeling refreshed and soft, but they’re just not doing anything to improve my skin at all. Having said all that, the spot gel is somewhat effective and does reduce the size and redness of blemishes but only to a certain extent and doesn’t completely abolish them.

If anyone has any product recommendations for spot/blemish prone skin, please let me know!

The Pore-fessional Primer |Dreams That Glitter

20140601-170633-61593128.jpg

I’ve been meaning to review this product for a while and I’m finally getting around to writing it! This is Benefit’s Pore-fessional Primer. The product itself feels really nice on your skin, it slides on brilliantly and creates a nice matte base for make up. It’s really lightweight and doesn’t even feel like you have anything on your skin. Having said that, I’m not sure it’s worth the price as apart from creating a nice base for make up and how nice it feels, it doesn’t really do an awful lot if I’m honest. I wouldn’t say it offers any kind of real coverage although it appears to be sort of tinted. For me, a good moisturiser is a good enough primer!

If you’ve tried this product or any similar, let me know what you thought!

Review: Face Mask |Dreams That Glitter

20140209-215046.jpg

Apologies if the photo isn’t the greatest quality, I took it on my phone and attempted to fiddle around with the editing a bit, so I’m not entirely sure what it’s going to turn out like.

I’ve been meaning to review this product for a while and as far as I’m aware I haven’t posted about it yet, but again apologies if I have, I noticed that one of my posts has completely disappeared off my blog and it really confused me, I thought I’d gone insane and imagined writing and posting it. Weird.

Anyway. Moving on.

I bought this product just after Christmas because that was when my skin was being particularly problematic, probably just because it wasn’t getting enough of what it needed and I wasn’t being strict enough with any kind of routine. Anyway I went into Boots with the entire of buying some new skincare products (this really feels like I’ve written about this before) and that’s exactly what I came out with. I came across a selection of these bottles which contain the equivalent to about ten facials which I think is fantastic. It was quite cheap too, I think a little over £3. There’s a whole range for all different skin types; at the moment I’ve got the one for oily and spot prone skin. After applying a thick layer and leaving for ten minutes and then washing off with warm water, it really feels like my skin is much more refreshed and feels a lot softer after the treatment too. I like to splash my face with cold water after too for an extra boost. For the first couple of weeks I used it twice a week but now I’ve settled for once. It’s a great pick me up skin treatment that will make your face feel fantastic even if it is only short term. So I recommend you go and pick one up yourself as there is one suitable for lots of different needs.

Review: Tresemmé Split Remedy |Dreams That Glitter

I’ve been meaning to review this product for a while now, I must have had it for about a year.

Image

Tresemmé Split Remedy Intense Recovery Masque

Tresemmé says:

There’s nothing like freshly-cut hair to add a spring to your step, but over time split ends can make your hair look frizzy and dull. Introducing Tresemmé Split Remedy. The revolutionary Reconstructing Complex repairs up to 80% of split ends you have with regular use (as measured after three washes) – try Split Remedy shampoo and conditioner together or any other product in the line – and with regular use keeps working to help prevent new split ends from occurring and visibly maintain repair. So you can now retain the look & feel of a salon fresh-cut for longer.

I have to say I was really impressed with the product right away, and you do get very quick results. My hair was never in a completely awful condition split ends wise, but I went through a stage of blow drying my hair daily and straightening it quite a bit so it wasn’t in the best condition. I was also quite prone to not having it cut when I was trying to grow it (Nowadays I realise a regular trim actually helps it grow quicker because it’s kept in better condition, and I leave my hair to dry naturally whenever I can, I’m really not fussed about straightening it now either). Within a week of using the product my hair was visibly more healthy looking particularly at the ends, and as a deep conditioner it leaves your hair feeling extra smooth and silky as well. Basically you use shampoo and conditioner as normal (there is a split end remedy collection but I use whatever shampoo we have) and then use the deep conditioner on the ends and after leaving it in for a few minutes, wash it out thoroughly.

I actually bought this product by mistake, I was looking for the Split End Leave In and Protect serum which I had tried before and liked, and somehow I got the two confused but I guess it ended up as a happy accident.

I’ve deemed it important to mention I got this product after I had a sample of it from Latest In Beauty which is a website that allows you to order samples of beauty products including moisturisers, face masks, hair products, to try before you buy. Each month there is a few product samples on offer that you can pick three of and they’re sent to you in a little box, and in terms of payment it adds a pound or something to your phone bill if you have a contract which I found quite handy. There are other beauty boxes which are bigger and put together in collections which are also available to purchase.

Film: Girl Most Likely|Dreams That Glitter

Imogene (Kristen Wiig) is a failed playwright who lives in New York, however her life falls apart as she looses her successful boyfriend, job and home. After an attempted ‘suicide’ she ends up having to live with her mother in New Jersey for a while only to find out her room has been rented out to another guy. Things don’t seem to be how she left home, and it’s evident why she left to go to the big city to fulfill her dreams. After hitting rock bottom the guy who has taken over her bedroom (Lee – Darren Criss) helps her get back on her feet and her life back on track.

It’s a typical rom com storyline really I guess. The film has quite a similar feel to it as Bridesmaids does, which I loved. I found Girl Most Likely really funny and loved Kristen’s character, it was very relateable too. If you’ve read my posts in the past you’ve probably guessed that Darren Criss was the best part of the movie for me… 😉 He’s just so damn talented, and I absolutely loved him in this movie. Acting, singing, wearing eyeliner, swearing in French, sex scenes, shirtless scenes… what more can a girl want?!

Now this is maybe a slightly biased review and opinion considering that Darren is one of my biggest idols and I love him a lot, hence him being the reason for me being so excited for this movie! I saw it on Saturday with a few more crazy Darren fans I like to call my friends. I would totally recommend this film if you’re looking for a pick me up or something to laugh at! (or if you just want to admire Darren it’s excellent for that too)

Film Review: City Of Bones |Dreams That Glitter

Okay, so yesterday I went to see The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones. If you’ve been reading my recent posts you’ll know I’ve been excited about seeing it after getting completely stuck into the book last week. (I’m going to stick in here that the second book isn’t nearly as good, I was quite disappointed with it really – rather than droning on for a whole post. However, I’ve been told the third book of the series, City Of Glass is the best one, so I’m forced to continue on.) Anyway. The film.

I’m going to keep this short and mention here that there won’t be any spoilers in this review. That way, I’ll keep it simple and short. If I go into too much detail and include bits that spoil the film/book if you haven’t seen/read it, then this shall end up a really really long blog post and I can’t really be bothered to write that much now.

So. Here we all were, me and my two friends, and my mum on either side of me. We were all really looking forward to it, having all read the book fairly recently and loved it, even my mum. The film started. We watched in anticipation as we waited for our favourite scenes of the book to come up. It started in a different place to the book, and a lot of the scenes were in a completely different order to the book and things were revealed much earlier on than they were in the book which I think took away the ending a bit.

The casting wasn’t too bad, the character for Clary and her mum was ok, Jace was good, Simon wasn’t geeky enough… my mum even thought that Simon struck her immediately as hotter than Jace although that’s not how the story is meant to go. Simon is supposed to be Clary’s typical geeky best friend, not at all attractive. Luke wasn’t at all how I pictured him in my head, and Valentine was completely wrong.

And then they started bringing in part of City Of Ashes into it and that threw us all. Some of the action took place in the wrong setting too, and everything was just so unbelievably different it was just so far away from the book I’ve never seen a film like that.

Now despite all that, the film was actually amazing! Like, after me saying all that, you’d expect the film to be bad, but no, it was actually really good. Anyone that hadn’t read the book would’ve probably thoroughly enjoyed the film and wouldn’t have known any better, and then there was us four at the back talking through the majority of it and trying to work out if anything had actually stayed the same. I don’t think much did… There was a couple of bits that just completely confused us, so maybe they got some of the other books (there are five in the series) in there too, who knows? And since they messed this one up a bit, I’m wondering if they’ll get to do any other films to follow. There was too many stupid little things that just weren’t right and ah… It’s conflicting because it wasn’t a bad film it was just too different and I don’t really know how to feel about it. Any other opinions? Has anyone read the book and seen the film and agrees/disagrees with everything here? Please share what you thought!

Beauty Essentials|Dreams That Glitter

Here are a few of my essential beauty products – from skincare to make up – that I feel it would be difficult to live without…

Skincare

Image

Clean & Clear Deep Cleansing Lotion

I’ve used this cleanser for about three years now and it keeps my skin really clean, opening up the pores and deep cleansing – excellent for skin that is prone to breakouts. However it is incredibly strong and have once or twice made the fatal mistake of getting it to close to my eyes… ouch!

Image

Simple Eye Make Up Remover

I love Simple products, they are generally very good and although this is supposed to be for sensitive skin etc, it does sometimes have a tendency to make my eyes hurt after using it, but it does do the job it’s meant to.

Simple Cleansing Lotion

Simple’s cleansing lotion is incredibly light on your skin, and removes foundation easily, leaving your skin feeling fresh and revived after being trapped under make up all day long.

Simple Rich Moisturiser

Simple does two moisturisers: rich and light. The light one is made especially for oily skin as people with oily or combination type skin often think they don’t need to moisturise but it is still important in order to keep the skin looking young and feeling smooth. I don’t have dry skin at all, but I actually prefer the rich moisturiser to the light one.

Image

The Body Shop Vitamin E Body Lotion

I love Body Shop products, and although they can be pricey they do tend to last for quite some time and they are excellent quality. I’ve recently got this new Vitamin E body lotion and it’s fantastic, it locks the moisture into your skin leaving it feeling soft and smooth for hours after application.

Face

Image

Models Own Make Up Brushes

These were a bargain set, at just £10. There is an assortment from a big brush for foundation/bronzer to smaller ones that can be used for eyebrows or eye shadow.

Image

Miss Sporty Morning Baby! BB Cream 001 Nude Radiance

Considering this is the lightest shade it comes in, it’s actually a little dark and on the orange side for my skin tone, but underneath foundation it doesn’t look too bad, or if I just use the tiniest minimal amount by itself for a more natural look. It actually has a bit of a glimmer to it leaving your face literally glowing. It is a light cream which is easily applied with a brush.

Bourjois Paris 123 Perfect Foundation No. 51 Light Vanilla

This liquid foundation from Bourjois Paris has 3 correcting pigments: 1; yellow pigments – anti dark circles, 2; mauve pigments – anti dull complexion and 3; green pigments – anti redness. This helps to achieve a flawless complexion and lasts well all day. It also mattifies the skin effectively.

Miss Sporty So Matt Perfect Stay Smooth Pressed Powder 001 Light

I think every girl should own a pressed powder of some kind, especially when summer comes around and it’s easy to let your skin get out of control, ending up with that shiny, greasy look. Nice. Although it comes with a sponge applicator I like to use a brush to apply powder as I find its easier to get an even coverage without turning your skin orange. Remember to lightly powder down your neck as well so you don’t get that awful face – neck line!

Image

Miss Sporty Liquid Concealer with Vitamins E & C 001 Light

This concealer is brilliant for covering up various blemishes, it rubs into the skin nicely and doesn’t leave too much build up, and doesn’t clog up your skin too much either like some concealers can.

Miss Sporty Coverstick 001 Light

Sometimes a dab with this coverstick before applying foundation or BB cream is all it takes to get rid of any visible blemishes, however this combined with the liquid concealer does the trick for the more stubborn blemishes.

Eyes

Image

Miss Sporty Pump Up Booster Mascara

This mascara definitely adds plenty of volume to my lashes and creates a bit of length too, it is easy to apply, rarely leaving clumps in your lashes which can be tricky to get rid of without ruining your entire look. The only thing that’s missing is that it isn’t waterproof (I need to invest).

Miss Sporty Studio Lash Liquid Liner

Most liquid eyeliners can be rather pricey but this is brilliant value for money. It’s thick black consistency is great and it comes with a very small brush which makes the application so much easier. It also has brilliant staying power.

Maybelline New York Expression Kajal Gentle Precision Eyeliner 33 Black

Every basic make up kit is in need of a simple black eyeliner pencil. This one is great as it is easy to draw one thin black line with, the pencil is smooth and soft so it doesn’t irritate your eyes like some do. There isn’t a lot else to say about it!

Lips

Image

L’Oreal Glam  Shine Stain Splash 101 Lolita

I’ll admit I bought this product under the influence of Cheryl… but it is fantastic and well worth the £7 I spent on it. It comes in various different colours and I originally wanted the bright red one but this was the only one in stock when I got it, and it’s a lovely colour so I didn’t mind too much. The colour stays on for hours and your lips stay shiny for ages after application too. And it smells great! What more can you possibly want?

Vaseline Original

If you don’t own at least one pot of Vaseline, I’m seriously judging you right now! I rarely leave the house without it, and apply it multiple times throughout the day… it’s my favourite essential product and I don’t think I’d live without it! I feel so lost if I go out and leave it at home. (Is it true it makes your eyelashes longer? Please share your thoughts…)

Thank you for reading! What are your make up essentials?

My Leotard Collection|Dreams That Glitter

This is my (growing) leotard collection… I don’t have many, and they’re relatively plain considering all the different ones you can get now, but I hope soon to get some more interesting designs and colours! Most of these are from Dance Direct which is an amazing dance website with loads of discounted products, so if you don’t know about this site then get yourself over there, it’s dancewear heaven!

Image Back

  • Black Capezio ENB Cross Strapped Leotard

This is my current favourite leotard, it’s different to the other ones I’ve had, because until fairly recently I only took one ballet lesson a week and so only needed my navy regulation leotard. I decided to get a more interesting different one when I started vocational work (I’m currently doing Inter Foundation and hope to be taking the exam later this year. I would be also doing Intermediate alongside it but I can’t afford to do more than I am already). This leotard has two sets of straps, one pair that cross over at the back and the other pair are just regular straps, however they sit quite low on my shoulders and are quite prone to slipping right down which is quite annoying… other than that, I love this leotard and would happily get another one (if there wasn’t so many different ones to choose from). It has a shelf bra lining and the fabric is quite thick, and fits the body snugly.

Image

  • Navy Blue Plume Round Neck Leotard

This is my favourite when I have to wear a blue leotard, like I did for my Grade 8 exam. It’s a very simple design, with a scoop neckline front and back, with quite wide straps and a shelf bra lining. It has quite a high cut leg which can often make your legs look longer, and at only 5’2 that’s always a good thing!

Image

  • Navy Blue Roch Valley Camisole Leotard

I loved this leotard when I first got it, because it was the first leotard I got that wasn’t the standard navy blue regulation leotard that you get for Grade 3+ with the twisted front and v-line neck. I bought it in a size 4 which is equivalent to a UK dress size 12, so it’s a bit big on me now, and I like leotards to fit tight to the body. The straps on this are not at all tight either and are quite reluctant to stay in place. The back of the leotard often falls down a bit with certain movement which isn’t very helpful.

ImageImage

                            Front                                                             Back

  • Navy Blue Turtle Neck Velour Leotard

This is the leotard I wore when I did ISTD modern, it’s not the official regulation one but it’s very similar, other than the logo on the left hip. It has a high polo neck and a keyhole back, with a clasp fastening at the back of the neck. I think the regulation leotard has a higher neck than this one does, but it’s still horrible to wear in the heat! This one has a relatively low cut leg which isn’t as flattering.
